NYC was the worst of any major city in the world. But while the Canadian wildfires behind this apocalyptic-feeling turn will eventually pass, these summer doldrums be only the beginning.

Summertime Blues

However, this classic song 🎶 “Summertime” began with a work of literature, a 1926 novel titled Porgy. Written by DuBose Heyward.

The highly acclaimed and quickly successful book, portraying a Black community in Charleston, South Carolina, was soon turned into a play by the author with the help of his wife Dorothy.

The play immediately struck famed composer George Gershwin, and in 1934, he alongside his brother and frequent musical partner, Ira, in collaboration with the Heywards, crafted what would be the 1935 opera Porgy and Bess.

The English-language opera by the above-named brothers and American composers, with a libretto written by author DuBose Heyward and lyricist was a smash hit when it was Written on September 2, 1935.…
