While Sears, Walmart, Target, Kmart, Macy’s and so many other large retail stores are luring shoppers with "Big Shopping Deals", may we suggest that you consider spending your time and efforts with those who may not be as fortunate as ourselves.

What about a buy nothing day, or if you can not control the urge and you absolutely must shop, then how about supporting a neighborhood mom and pop type of local business.

It is becoming increasingly obvious every season that supporting our small businesses and Main street shops is critically important, not only here on City Island but everywhere from an economic point of view, an ethical and environmental one as well.

Shopping at locally owned businesses helps employ neighbors at decent wages and serves our local consumers. It also means becoming more self-sufficient and less dependent on imports.

Our support for these mom and pop businesses moves control from distant corporations, back into the community where it has always belonged.
