The United Nations?

Issue

The United Nations is supposed to promote global co-operation towards creating and maintaining a new world order. As leaders of the international community gathered in New York City to participate in their annual UN General Assembly, Secretary-General António Guterres tried to put a positive face on these disturbed times.

The reviews are in and some observers who are weighing in say it may have ended today with one speech, as #POTUS delivered a nondiplomatic message of gloom and doom. Others say he brought the same confrontational style of leadership he is injecting at home to the world's most prominent international organization, but some hailed his new approach. For example, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu gave the speech this review. "In over 30 years in my experience with the UN, I never heard a bolder or more courageous speech," What say you?

UN REACT

—"This was a bombastic, nationalist speech. It must have been decades since one last heard a speech like that in the U.N. General Assembly. ... This was a speech at the wrong time to the wrong audience." Margot Wallstrom, foreign minister of Sweden.

—"Trump's ignorant hate speech belongs in medieval times-not the 21st Century UN -unworthy of a reply. Fake empathy for Iranians fools no one." Tweet from Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif.

—"No leader can come and question our democracy, can come and question our sovereignty. We do not accept threats from President Trump or whoever in this world." Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza.

—"Syria, Cuba and Venezuela are (painted as) almost the worst dictatorships in the history of the humankind." Konstantin Kosachev, head of the foreign affairs committee in the upper house of the Russian parliament. He said the speech was "contradictory," mixing expressions of respect for nations' sovereign rights with a "barefaced U.S. pretense to determine who has such rights and who does not."
